Tashine & Katherine: You should begin to organize your T/Q/R. Please post it to this workpage. Once you have a strong T/Q/R, you want to go back to your source documents, gather relevant information, and organize that information into a radial web. If you need a model for the radial web, see the link at the bottom of the homepage.
Flag me down during the workshop to talk about the T/Q/R further.

-Feb 1943 Hunter was officially called U.S. Naval Training Center
[?] Why did they pick this spot? This and the following questions are really good research questions. What you want to do is to keep these questions in mind as you continue to read. When you think you have found information that answers the questions, you want to indicate that by writing the title of the document in which you found the answer next to the question. An even better approach would be to create a web that has a link between the information from this document and the information from the other source. This way you create a "picture" of how the data fits together. You can then use the web as a road map for the writing of your essay. You can find a link to the webbing webpage at the bottom of the homepage. If you created any webs this week, please give them to me this Saturday and I'll upload them for you.
- In the original training of enlisted WAVES, the shortcoming, fortunately not too long in being spotted, was the failure to include general naval indoctrination.
[?] What did they do to improve this error? An equally important question is "What does the author of this article mean by "general naval indoctrination"?
- august 1942 was when the waves at Hunter college opened.
-the first group of recruits to school by 9 October to be trained principally as radiomen, yeomen, and storekeepers
-on the same day, october 9, four training schools opened to women
- Continued expansion of WAVE training at Stillwater,Bloomington, and Madison was accomplished by phasing out classes of men.
-As the men's barracks were vacated, women took their place
-by Feb 1 1943 nine schools for the training of the hospital corpsmen had been established at the naval hospitals
-in consequence, enlisted women did not acquire the desired feeling of the being in the Navy
- on Dec. 30 1942, authorized a centralized recruit or "boot" school for WAVES to be established at Hunter College, the Bronx, New York
pgs 103-104
-there was a problem of space and the 24-acre campus provided a spacious open area
-they had one large gym and 6 small ones for physical training
- the walton high school was used sometimes during bad weather for reviews and drills
-on Feb 8 1943 hunter was commissioned as the U.S Naval Training Center
- women marched in platoons to classes and their approach was signaled by singing
-when the first regiment of recruits reported aboard, 173 of ficers (118 of them women) and 210 enlisted personnel ( 17 of them women) constituted the staff.
-The NAVY had a problem in finding dormitory space.
-Took 13 apartments buildings
-largest 900 and smallest 300
-Apartment buildings were vacated for WAVE housing.
-2,500 recruits had to live in these buildings. Do you get any sense of how the residents of these apartment buildings responded to the Navy taking over their buidlings? Did the people have to move? Were they financially compensated for having to move? Did the Navy help them find new housing? You might want to create a web that shows the different problems the Navy had to solve in opening the training facilities at Hunter.
PRIMARY DOCUMENTS
Women Marines at Hunter
[?] How many women were there?
[?] Why are they relieving men for active service? Another good research question. Take a minute and think about it. The United States has just entered a war against German and Italy in Europe and Japan in the Pacific. The Army and Navy will need to use every man possible to fight the enemy. In addition, new facilities and camps will need to be established and staffed in both Europe and the Pacific. If these men are being shipped overseas, who is going to do their work? Women were not permitted to fight in combat.
-Hunter College included:
*woman Marines
*waves
*spars Do you know for what these acronyms stand? What is the connection between the United States Navy and the Marine Corps?
Waves Beauty Routine
-women's navy:
*wake up at 5:30 during the first few weeks ad go to sleep at 9:00
*exercise, work and sleep which helps them with their skin
Waves women also have a beauty shop for some treatments
55 min is the usual extent for a free period
[?] why did they only have a recess of 3 or 4 hours?
[?] if they were so strict why did they let woman smoke? Again, two great research questions!! How long were the women in training at Hunter before they shipped out for more specific training? What did they have to learn before they shipped out? You might want to group the information from this document with the one below and any others that tell you something about what life was like at the training facility.
Wave Sentries Skilled With Club
-Daytime guards work from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m.
[?] what attach(s) were they expecting?
More Families To Move
[?] Where did these families move to?
[?] Where did they get the money from to pay for the facilities of so many families? I'm impressed by your research questions. You want link this information with the data you found in the other documents that focus on the housing situation. Create a web!!
Hunter Students Shiver in Classes
[?] Why did they choose Public School 76?
-in some rooms the temperature remained at 32 degrees and in almost all classes students sat in overcoats.
- students were given 15 min to change classes from the main building at Hunter College and school 76
- cafeteria was crowded with 300 instructors eating
- double almost all food orders
WAVES At Hunter Get New Recreation Hall
-Recreation center was furnished with sofas, easy chairs, tables, lamps, a writing desk, mirror, pictures, three card tables, and many others.
-The help was provided by Chaplain Newell D. Lindner.
[?] Why did Chaplain Newell D. Linder wanted to help the recreation center for the WAVES?What did he want in return?

Please remember to post your notes from the secondary source onto this workpage. I would suggest using the Topic/Main Idea/Important Details format we used in class. Please find below a template of the format you can use as a model.
Main Idea: XXXXXXXXXXXX
Important Details: XXXXXXXXXXXX
XXXXXXXXX (page 364)
YYYYYYYYYY (page 365)
ZZZZZZZZZZZ (page 365)
While you want to organize the data so that you do not need to look back again at the text, it's always helpful to include the page number. It may come in handy if you want to go back and find a quotation.
Remember to write out any questions that might come to mind as you read through the material.
Let me know if you have any questions.

I found this and i though it would be useful for my research about waves at hunter college. This is just the beginning of my research and im still going to add some more.
Three campuses of the City University of New York are in The Bronx, including Bronx Community College(occupying the former University Heights Campus of New York University), Hostos Community College, and Lehman College(formerly the uptown campus of Hunter College)
Heres some more:
The late 1930s saw the construction of Hunter College in the Bronx(later known as the Bronx Campus). During the Second World War, Hunter leased the Bronx Campus Buildings to the United States Navy who used the facilities to train 95,00 women volunteers for military service as WAVES and SPARS.
I put all of this together and came to the conclusion that Lehman College(which is located in Kingsbridge) was actually Hunter College Campus. Therefore, Lehman's College Campus was used to train women volunteers for military services such as WAVES. (katherine)
Katherine:
Nice logic statement at the end of your last posting above. Is there any specific information on the Wikipedia page that is especially relevant to your research on the WAVES at Hunter College? Is Hunter specifically mentioned? If so, you might think of summarizing that information and posting it on this page. If you have any questions, drop me a line. Chuck
Some of the problems they had were:
-Housing- Rooms were not provided at Hunter College therefore they had to take buildings close to Hunter College and provide women with the things they needed in order to live there and go on with their training.
-Food- In the cafeteria at Hunter College food orders had to be doubled because of the amount of people training there.
